Korela Fortress (external inspection) in Priozersk
Priozersk is an ancient Karelian settlement, mentioned in chronicles as the city of Korela. At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, Novgorodians and Korelians founded a fortress here on an island in the Uzerve (Vuoksa) River to protect the northwestern borders of the republic from the Swedes. You will have the opportunity to explore the fortress and hear a fascinating story about the complex relationship between Veliky Novgorod and Sweden, about the fortress' prisoners: Ivan IV Antonovich, the "banned emperor," about Yevgeny Pugachev's two wives and their children, about the Decembrist Wilhelm Küchelbecker, and much more.

The city of Sortavala. A brief tour of the city.
The city of Sortavala is located on the shores of Lake Ladoga, in the very center of the Ladoga skerries. The center of the Northern Ladoga region, one of the oldest cities in Karelia, this city can rightfully be considered Swedish, Finnish, and Russian. Some of the city's districts are located on adjacent islands, creating a typical Karelian landscape – rocky fjords around the bluish-gray waters of the lake. You will learn about the history of the border town, the diverse architecture of its provincial streets, and monuments of "Finnish Romanticism".

Lunch at a city café

Ruskeala Akhvenkoski Waterfalls.
Transfer to the Akhvenkoski Waterfalls, a cascade of several waterfalls located on the Tohmajoki River. The water here rarely freezes, only in severe frosts, and suspension rope bridges have been installed over the waterfalls. These waterfalls became especially popular in the early 1970s, after the release of the film "The Dawns Here Are Quiet" which was filmed in this amazing place. A walk along the ecological trail is an optional extra.

Ruskeala Mountain Park Tour
A tour along the history trails of Ruskeala Mountain Park. The crown jewel of this park is the famous Marble Canyon. This enormous basin, carved by hand from a massive marble layer, is half filled with the purest emerald water. It is framed by gently sloping and steep cliffs rising up to 25 meters above the lake's surface. The canyon, surrounded by marble walls, captivates with its beauty at any time of year. Marble quarrying took place here in the 18th and 19th centuries, and it was from here that marble was delivered for the Marble and Mariinsky Palaces, as well as St. Isaac's Cathedral.
During the tour, you will not only be told the history of this place but also be provided with full information on what to do in the park after the tour.

Free time in the Mountain Park (active entertainment in the park for an additional fee)

Departure from Ruskeala Mountain Park
You can conclude your excursion in the park with a fascinating journey on the Retro Train (optional). Today, this is the only daily steam train in Russia, the interior of which is designed in the style of the "Nikolaev Express". The train arrives in the town of Sortavala, where our bus will pick you up to St. Petersburg.
