The Old Tatar Quarter is the soul of Kazan's historic center. A stroll through it will reveal the history of Tatar culture and Tatar merchants. It is home to approximately 70 architectural and cultural monuments from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. You'll see Kazan's oldest stone mosque, the Al- Marjani Mosque (also known as the Yunus Mosque or the First Cathedral Mosque), built in 1770 by decree of Catherine the Great, when she permitted the construction of stone mosques after the capture of Kazan. It is the only one that has never been closed.

Time has preserved a significant portion of the territory, remaining largely unchanged to this day. The highlight of the tour will be a visit to the Museum, built over an archaeological excavation site on the site of the historic settlement of Sviyazhsk. Here, you'll see wooden buildings from the 16th-18th centuries, learn about the occupations of Sviyazhsk's inhabitants from its very beginning, stroll along a glass-enclosed, centuries-old street, and glimpse into a truly ancient building. The exhibits feature items found in the excavation site—there are no other museums like it in Russia.
