Murmansk. The capital of the Russian Arctic
Murmansk is the largest settlement in the world located north of the Arctic Circle. It was founded in 1916 as a workers' settlement near a railway station under construction. Today, Murmansk is one of Russia's largest ports, an ice-free port that annually attracts crowds of tourists seeking the Northern Lights and the beauty of the Arctic. Most of Murmansk is located on the Kola Peninsula, surrounded by the Barents and White Seas. The highest point in Murmansk is Solnechnaya Gorka, a 305-meter peak on the city's eastern border. Thanks to this location, Murmansk residents and travelers alike enjoy breathtaking landscapes that defy description every day.
